When i was travelling on my own in Brasil, i finally made it to Manaus, taking 5 inland flights to get there. I figured out that i could join a small group of student travellers who had more or less the same plans as i had. One of these was a 3 day trekking in the Amazon forest up the dark river ( RIO NEGRO). As this river runs trough wetlands that are manely acidic, almost no mosquitos can reproduce in this water, witch makes it a far more convenient place to travel then other parts of the Amazon.
We hired a local inhabitant, who originated from the border of Brasil and Guyana in the north. He was about 1,5 m tall (small) and had a great sence of humor ! His pronounciation of English was sometimes hilaric.
He was happy to walk us around and share lots of his knowlegde concerning the tropical forest. I would become clear that we could not have wished anybody else that this tiny guy who walked barefeed no mather what happened!
The first day we all had to carry a dead chicken in a plastic bag ( our dinner for the first night ), and at the end of the day we had to clean it, remove the feathers and cook it on an improvised barbeque. The only thing we have seen so far is big trees and bigger trees and even bigger trees. No animals except for ants, worms and one dangerous bushmaster ( poisoness snakes)
